Weekly Sales: West German Pottery

I say this every time, but there really are some gems amongst this lot. See if you can spot what they are:
One of my favourites ending tomorrow night is this unusual Roth pot:

Despite what it says in the listing ( I did it…) it is actually quite a rare form; we’ve not seen one of these before. I used Aidan’s previous listing to help me write it and kept ‘a well collected form’, thinking it was a piece of his sales patter… apparently, it’s quite unknown so a more accurate description might be ‘a well searched for’ form. Oh well… the collectors will know their stuff well enough to appreciate it! The glaze is amazing: vibrant, bold and striking. Roth are a company who produced such a plethora of different forms, glazes and colours. Usually, I’m not such a fan, but I do find this one quite appealing.
Just to show my erratic taste, I also love the colours of the glaze on this Scheurich 238:

Look at the turquoise and silver against the pale grey of that Scheurich pot! We’re in the process of doing up our house, and we’ve got a few old decorating books from the 1950s to use as inspiration. In one of them, it advocates using unusual things to inspire your colour schemes, such as flowers or favourite pictures. This pot would be a brilliant colour palette for a room! Or nails! I might have to paint my nails in something resembling this pattern tomorrow. I should explain that I’m a little bit obsessed with nail varnish, so I should have the colours to create this somehow.
One of the most exciting pieces we’ve put up for sale for a long time is this Otto Keramik piece:

Now, for quite a while I was adamant that we couldn’t possibly sell this one. The shape! The colours! The ridiculously drippy, metallic red glaze! But, as all obsessive collectors know, eventually you have to make choices about what to keep and what to sell. Sadly, it has been usurped by other pretenders to the West German crown. At least the beauty of Ebay – and the field we are working and collecting within – is that you know that when it does sell it will be going to someone who will love it, cherish it and hopefully give it pride of place in their homes. Otto are a pretty stupendous company, with pieces brimming with originality and individuality and this one is certainly no exception. The founder of the company, Otto Gerharz, was very interested in the technical development of glazes and I think you can see this in the complexities of the glaze here.
So, those are my picks of the pottery bunch – which ones do you rate? Or even, which do you hate? WGP is an exciting field that divides opinion and can spark an extreme reaction one way or another. What does it provoke in you?

Potty Parents

Last year, my dad and sister did their own mini German road trip and came back with a few West German Pots of their own. I bought a couple from them, including a gorgeous Italian dish and an amazing Schaffenacker piece. This week, Aidan was selling some of their other pieces:

Apologies for the lack of blogging recently – far too much to do with the house and work. Hopefully, the end (as far as work is concerned) is in sight. I cannot wait for that final GCSE exam to be done! As much as I’ll miss my two year Eleven classes, I’ll definitely enjoy the extra free periods I get in return. More blogging will ensue at that point, I promise.

There are all kinds of pots for sale:
As with all of his Ebay listings, Aidan takes a lot of time to ensure that the pictures are truly representative of the colours, designs and proportions of the pots. Listings always include a detailed description of the items – any tiny blemish is described, and he does have eagle eyes! He spots things that I cannot see, even when he’s pointed them out to me. So you can be sure that if you buy something from us, what you see is most definitely what you get.
Some of my particular favourites from this week and next are these:
Roth Fat Lava Jug
Just look at the glaze on that! It’s an amazing texture; crusty, thick and bursting with colour. ‘Fat Lava’ could not be a more appropriate way to describe it.
Remember ‘nu rave’? No, me neither, but the neon/rave scene will always have a place in popular culture. Why not pay homage to it with this:

If ever there were a ‘man’ vase, this one would be it:

“You Jane, Me Great Big Man Vase…” There’s definitely something very masculine and tribal about it. It looks like it should be dug up out of a pit, storing the brains of some long dead pharaoh or emperor. Maybe that’s just my imaginative interpretation of it!

I’ll be honest; I’m not sure how Aidan persuaded me to part with that punch bowl! I love it. Imagine having your mulled wine out of that this Christmas? Would certainly be a talking point amongst your relatives and a fantastic way to initiate them into the West German pottery fold.

I’m worried that beautiful Scheurich will get overshadowed by its more gaudy cousins. The glaze on this is beautiful: subtle, swirled green covered in a silver, metallic oil. It was difficult to capture truly on pictures, but I think Aidan did a good job of getting it just right.

Big Pot…

This amazing pot is appearing courtesy of Richard (@dipperdog), a collector of West German Pottery who really knows his stuff, seeking out the very best in in the WGP world. You can be assured that if Richard likes it, it’s something of good design, style and quality.

This is made by the Roth factory, and I wouldn’t say they were normally known for their gigantic pottery. Skilful, unusual and detailed glazes, yes… but not size. They are usually a quality over quantity type of company. This one seems to combine both, however.

Look at that design – those handles are like the loops of a bow, or a cat’s ears. In fact, that’s exactly what it is now I’m looking at it – a cat’s face! I’m sorry, I have this odd thing of constantly looking for faces in everything, along with comparing people to animals and trying to name everything.
Anyway, that weird fact about me aside, this is a lovely pot and I’m so glad Richard let me post it up here. I’m off to a gig tonight, to see Beth Jeans Houghton at the Deaf Institute. I was there last night with friends for, what I thought was meant to be the Spotifriday night; presuming this to be indieriffic due to TDI’s usual music stylings… no, no it was not. Cheesy 80s and the Best of Jamaican Dancehall 2002 by the sound of it. And, as everyone’s talking about it, how glorious is this weather? Are we sure we’re in October, and we’ve not all experienced some mass ‘Flash Forward’ style event? It’s just glorious.
Speaking of which, I’m off to do a bit more reading of ‘Fingersmith’ in the garden. Hope you’re having a lovely Saturday too.
West German Pottery Sale

We’ll be throwing open the doors to our tiny terrace from 10 til 5. We live in Glossop, which is halfway between Manchester and Sheffield, so anybody willing to travel to there is more than welcome to come along and have a look:

Bay Keramik 224-20
Despite the title of this post, I’ve actually had two pretty good days, busy but productive. I’m referring to the weather with the title! Rain, drizzle, precipitation… whatever you want to call it; it has rained, rained and rained today. I left early yesterday morning with some gigantic parcels in tow to post before going to a house second viewing (exciting!), but alas! The Post Office was closed due to a power failure in the Glossop Co-op which is where it’s situated. Having lugged the parcels that far, they then had to come to the house viewing with me, causing eyebrows to be raised. Following that, they had to be taken back home due to a lack of power still… my arms were certainly aching by the time they finally got posted later yesterday afternoon. Today, it’s yet another grey, overcast day…
Anyway, because of the manky weather, I thought I’d do a grey, black and white themed pottery post. And also because it’s one of the few combinations of colours that I’ve not featured yet.
It’s quite a process to go through all of these and add the names and makers to each picture. We’re leaving for Germany this evening, so if I get chance then I’ll do some more. Green, green, green…

Yet for some reason, many people don’t like it; particularly in their retro pottery. I love it. So this is a Green Feast of West German pottery, just for me:
I had many grand plans of what I was going to accomplish this evening. Driving lesson went relatively well. It’s my third one so far (not counting the two I had two years ago…); today I managed hill starts, emergency stops, drove to Buxton, parallel parking, turning, up to fourth gear and back down again. However, I was feeling quite tired and stalled a few times which made me cross. I kept forgetting to put it back into first when I’d come to a stop. Anyway, the short story is: I’m tired. So the run and marking of year 7 assessments is not going to happen. What will now happen is a bath and some Heroes in bed. Ah, but first I have to actually make the bed… I know it’s early and I really don’t care! Night all…
A Little Ray of Sunshine…

I don’t care. At this moment in time, I’m feeling much happier so it’s all about colours to reflect that mood.
Teacher’s strike aside, I’ve got two devolved INSET days… in Basic English, this means I’ve got a five day weekend starting this morning. First stop: Manchester to get some accessories to go with my ‘thrifted’ (to pinch the Aussie/American parlance) Monsoon dress ready for the wedding we’re going to this weekend. I also need new makeup, shoes and a weekend bag. Then, later today I’m signed up to a knitting course at the Smithy Studios in Glossop. Friday morning… don’t talk to me about Friday morning… Oh, O.K… I’ve got a driving lesson. I’m a bit scared. The less said the better. Weekend = posh wedding at Lumley Castle (good luck Sarah and Matt!). Monday – day tripping somewhere with the Holtster.
So yeah, all in all, I’m quite happy.
